Halai Chlorophyll Sample Protocol

Hakai uses the following stack filters to retrieve a fraction size measurement of the chlorophyll samples:

  1. 20um
  2. mid-layer
    1. 3um
    2. 2um (pre-2015)
  3. GF/F

From those samples, the Chlorophyll-a and phaeopigments concentrations are retrieved by filtration, methanol acetone extraction, and fluorometry.

Missing terms from vocabularies

Following this protocol the two vocabularies are missing the following terms:

CF Standard names

Completed standard name Canonical units
mass_concentration_of_miscellaneous_phytoplankton_expressed_as_phaeopigments_in_sea_water kg m-3
mass_concentration_of_nanophytoplankton_expressed_as_phaeopigments_in_sea_water kg m-3
mass_concentration_of_phytoplankton_expressed_as_phaeopigments_in_sea_water kg m-3
mass_concentration_of_picophytoplankton_expressed_as_phaeopigments_in_sea_water kg m-3
In Process mass_concentration_of_phaeopigments_in_sea_water kg m-3

NVS P01 terms:

@jdelbel I'm not sure if the expression makes sense. Let us know. mass_concentration_of_phytoplankton_expressed_as_phaeopigments_in_sea_water

For NSV, we have terms for 2-20um, 3-20um, GFF-2um, GFF-3um.

We also need > 20um SCHLFLPQ (just chlorophyll) and > GF/F or Bulk (Chl and Phaeo, but couldn't find a term for this - weird).

I also noticed this, if we wanted to add a size fractionated sum CPHLFLP6. Might be a good idea.

it doesn't line up with the other naming conventions that lack "phytoplankton", but it should work as the pigments are from phytoplankton.

On second thought, phaeopigments aren't really a measure of the concentration of phytoplankton as it is a degradation product. It would be fine to use for Chlorophyll, but I recommend not using it for phaeopigments.

That makes me realize that for now, we are not distinguishing GFF-2um vs GFF-3um.

I think that we don't need it since it can easily be derived with the variable provided.
