First manifested with grub-probe / command. Re-entering the chroot environment and installing mdadm allows the remaining commands to execute and the resulting system to boot.

Yes, I know this is twisted. I was curious how performance of ZFS is on MD RAID vs. ZFS RAID. Definitely a corner case.
