Progress report update? #1410

50 days since the last update and almost a month over after new year - any progress?

matchavez commented 4 years ago

It's more or less a hobby… and it's time to move on.

PLEASE sell the app to someone who will see it through!

ijoseph commented 4 years ago

He’s done an incredible job, especially for a one-person project, to get it to this point.

mjclemente commented 4 years ago

@ijoseph Agreed. It's a remarkable app - really, really well done and distinct, with a wealth of features. Projects take time, life gets in the way, and software deadlines are notoriously hard, even for large companies. I'm grateful for the app, and any work that is done on it. Thanks!

matchavez commented 4 years ago

Look, I like the app as well. I'm not suggesting life doesn't get in the way. But it would be responsible for him to either sell, hire/contract, or open source it.

Or, all respect if he says "this is how it is; maintenance mode."

That's not what everyone was told. He said he'd be more active, etc. etc. So please, don't take it as anything other than appreciation that he's taken it this far, but we have to do what's best, as well. Otherwise, the best thing to do with this uncertainty is to advocate for the tools that have gone beyond Quiver.

Hopefully something decisive happens soon.

dev gave progress report 3 days ago? https://github.com/HappenApps/Quiver/issues/1381#issuecomment-578539556

he's made multiple commits pretty much every day for past 6 months. The app is great in its current form and will likely be even better soon.

matchavez commented 4 years ago

The app might be, as is, just fine. It lags with no iOS component. It is all stuffed JSON, so there's no substitution app or "use this app" for iOS. And think about it… he's about to offer v4, and v4 won't have iOS support. Or at least, there's no obvious appearance that it will.

I wish him luck, but Quiver is so far behind…

mpstaton commented 4 years ago

I’ve offered to fund it but never heard back!

I cannot help but agree with @matchavez - the Dev provided an update X days ago sure, but the update itself feels more like a repetition that he is delayed, and has no visibility on when things would be released and the likes. What worries me the most is how he indicated in November that he feels "confident" about a few things, only to retract later that he would be able to deliver something by end of the year, and here we are with another month gone by, with a I-don't-know-when update. When will this cycle end, or will it ever at all? What happens after this so-called huge release - would we wait for another 10 months for the next release?

Giving credit where it is due, there is no doubt that the app is great in terms of its concept and offers features that no other app has - making it a good fit for developers. That said, all that goodness is counterbalanced by how excruciatingly slow the dev is when it comes to rolling out features that are open since years and have multiple +1s, or bug fixes and improvements in general, and being ages behind compared to other similar apps out there in the market. I am not even sure if this app will even exist in half a decade from now, the way things are going and it makes me uncomfortable to rely on Quiver and stash multiple years notes and work in this app.

The app sure had promise and potential, but with the current state of affairs, I'd have to say that it just sucks.

runrunrirun commented 4 years ago

I've been disappointed that more progress hasn't happened with the app since it has so much potential, but the complaints here are retarded. I paid $10 for this 4 years ago and use it every day, I've already gotten my money's worth. If you really want to pay for a synced note-taking app that gets (bloatware) updates regularly, Evernote is waiting to take your money right now. I really wonder how many of you would actually pull $5/month out of your pockets to pay for a subscription version of this. My guess is that there would be screams of 'sell-out' and then everyone moves on to harass some other indie dev.

I've been at this a long time, and this is probably the fifth or sixth platform I've maintained notes in. Software comes and goes, and the first thing I look for is good import and export capability (which Quiver has). At some point, Quiver, too, will pass, and we all will have to deal with it. Think about it this way - if ylian announced today that there will be no further feature development, ever, what would you do? If what it does for you today is inadequate to you, you should be moving to something else, today.

matchavez commented 4 years ago

All due respect, if Ylian announced that he's canning it, fine. For me, anyhow, I've long since abandoned Quiver, but I kept an eye on it because of the posts here.

It isn't whether it's been abandoned or not; it's been lapped. Drafts is a notebook capable of iOS sync, and it's free, if you don't want Ever. But that's not the point. I can list several different options, but the reality is that we would all consider paying again if the app kept up with the times.

It has not.

It's not the $60/year. It's the lock-in that no one wants. Quiver has been very good about export; something the bigger players are not. People HATE subscription models because they aren't subscriptions. They're rentals - if you subscribe to something, you can keep it after you've stopped. You get kicked out of a rental, and that's what these services are.

Fortunately, GFM and apps have evolved to a degree that they're usable without JSON.

I wish the project well, but don't disparage users for expecting what they've been told is coming, year after year.

keeprock commented 4 years ago

Are you guys have a crave / an addiction for «new updates»? That's a well known syndrome. It is not your fault. I was guilty too.

Claiming that perfectly working (!), stable (not always, but MOST of the time, which is good enough for me), usable solution is somewhat «bad» because it doesn't have any «updates»? Without subscription model? Come on...

Yeah, I guess you just being brainwashed by the industry that have a need for justifying blowing money away on «updating» perfectly working solutions. No wonder you are unsatisfied then something is not «updating» per se.

Just think about an idea that maybe, maybe, most of the «updates» are a way to justify money spent and a marketing feat. #industrytruths

matchavez commented 4 years ago

That’s just a stupid reply.

1) We were told there would be updates by the author 2) His iOS system never panned out 3) The 4.0 update was expected to be a paid update

On top of that, many of us dealt with data loss and it’s pretty well known that the features have been lapped in the time from when this app was out in front.

You want an industry truth? Ship or die. That’s the truth.

keeprock commented 4 years ago

Stupid. Right. But you can't leave it alone, don't you? Must reply.. Chill, man, it is my opinion. You've got yours. We are all right in our own way. Btw, I prefer to not ship rather than die :) Health is a number one priority.

matchavez commented 4 years ago

It's a terrible opinion, and when you can't even defend it, it's worth saying so. The next 50 people that read it but don't have context will now understand why your take is terrible. It's not about being "right in our own way". Not everyone gets a trophy, and you're not right.

razmanugget commented 4 years ago

I agree with Matchavez and will gladly pay for a Quiver "update". But if it doesn't happen I'm not upset about the situation. Quiver has been great for my programming notes and I definitely got my money's worth out of the program.

Currently, I'm learning Polish and I'd really love to see a note program that handles tables well and has an iOS version. Does anyone have a recommendation? Feel like I've tried everything out there (Bear, Evernote, OneNote, Apple Notes, Simplenote, Boostnote, Notion). Notion gets the closest, but it seems a little pricey for what I need. Was hoping Quiver would have what I'm looking for in the new version, but the slow updates make me think this isn't the best direction

matchavez commented 4 years ago

I'll leave this link for my opinion in case anyone wants it on what to use, but tl;dr is:

Either you end up with a JSON database combo, or you use cloud sync of .md files. @razmanugget you've hit all the JSONs, so I'd suggest something like 1Writer for iOS, iCloud, and either a Typora-style for MacOS, or Atom/VSCode with the Markdown Preview Enhanced plug-in.

Bonus points if you need to do lots with tables, there's an app called TableFlip for that.

razmanugget commented 4 years ago

Typora looks great. Thanks for the recommendation. I did a little research on 1Writer and it looks good, but I can't find examples of how it displays tables and I've been burned a couple times, so I'll hold off on that one for now.

Thanks again for the advice.

matchavez commented 4 years ago

IMG_0745 IMG_0744 Colons can be used to align columns.

Tables Are Cool
col 3 is right-aligned $1600
col 2 is centered $12
zebra stripes are neat $1

There must be at least 3 dashes separating each header cell. The outer pipes (|) are optional, and you don't need to make the raw Markdown line up prettily. You can also use inline Markdown.

Markdown Less Pretty
Still renders nicely
1 2 3
razmanugget commented 4 years ago

Nice! Okay, you've convinced me to get 1Writer. I was just looking at MWeb and saw that it handles tables too, but they aren't quite as nice. Thank you

wizyoung commented 4 years ago

I finally lost the patience. I shifted to Notion and the experience meets my expectation well. I have waited for this major update of quiver for nearly two years. I kept contacting the author by email but the responses are always "soon", "planned", "maybe 1 or 2 months later". Sorry, I have no choice but to abandon quiver.
