Moving around Quiver.qvlibrary & missing notes #1447

Open rkustner opened 4 years ago

rkustner commented 4 years ago

Early this month I moved my Quiver.qvlibrary from Onedrive to Google Drive, by using the "Move Libary..." in the Sync settings. It looked like it went fine since I could see my history of older notes and notebooks.

However, I just noticed that when I try to open older notes, it only shows the title and no content.

I checked and the new path on Google Drive is only 110 Kb and the old path is 4,8 Mb.

How do I fix this situation? I need to merge my notes I created and changed after the move and the old notes to a single Library.

This is a serious bug - I went to open Quiver on my Mac and I had exactly the same - notebooks, heading but every single note was empty - no content.

I have Quiver on iPad and all the content was present there.

On my Mac I selected a note, right-clicked and chose "Show in Finder". I double-clicked the highlighted note in the Finder and it appeared with the content intact. I closed the window and opened the note in Quiver and all the content is back!

I'm running macOS 10.15.5 and Quiver 3.2.7

this is a workaround, but for hundreds of notes is a real pain in the ****. This needs fixing ASAP.

What is worse though is that new notes don't seem to be saved. They have titles but no content and clicking "Show in Finder" doesn't even open a Finder window and there seems to be no way to retrieve the note, even after restarting Quiver.

Quiver 3.2.7 here, I can't load my notes at all. I've attempted syncing, restoring from backup, and importing from note files. Nothing works.

Any word from the developers? I have been a happy user of Quiver for over a year but if I can't trust it to keep my notes I notice I start looking at other apps. If there's anything I can do to help debug this issue is let me know!

None-- I'm planning on migrating to org mode. Quiver is no longer usable :(

BlackTablet commented 3 years ago

Don't forget the workaround I mentioned in my post. It worked for every old note I tried, so you can get them back. They are not lost totally as they're still available in the Finder then Quiver. However .... to do that for every single note is a nightmare.

Such a shame and I'm sure it must be a simple fix given that a double-click, close and re-open brings it back. (For me anyway) But yes, time for something else quite probably :-(

rkustner commented 3 years ago

I tried your workaround in my version 3.2.6 (200) on my Mac but clicking around on empty notes sometimes opened up the original content but sometimes it opens a totally different note title without the content... so this sounds even more scary... I think I have a situation with two different library locations which it somehow is still mixing up...

rkustner commented 3 years ago

ah, so the notes are actually a collection of individual files on disks.... the meta.json describes the name of the notebook folder. So I could write a script that compares note files and copies non empty ones from the old location to the empty new ones.

I have same problem. Today when i open quiver, found all my files was gone - notebooks, heading but every single note was empty - no content.

When I reopened it, things came more serious. It can't be opened and it can't find the .qvlibrary files!!!

Everything was gone !

All of this sounds very unreliable. :-(

One thing that might help is that if you have an iPad you can download the companion app. It shows me all my notes that I’d previously downloaded and if I downloaded notes that were still in Dropbox then they all appeared just fine on my iPad! The text can then be copied/shared from the iPad app.

It’s tedious, but if you have an iPad it could allow you to retrieve all your notes.

I’ve also previously had situations where my Mac could not open the library but my iPad could still download all the content!

For anyone still having a problem with this, I also ran into this issue after moving my library and found a fix that worked for me in an older comment: https://github.com/HappenApps/Quiver/issues/1386#issuecomment-548850154. Opening the library file directly fixed it for me and brought the contents of all my notes back.

BlackTablet commented 3 years ago

Thanks very much hsdwayne, it does indeed fix it. But. When I quit the app then re-open, same problem - headings but no notes. Launching the app by opening the library works every time though. I suppose if I add the library to my dock or an alias of the library somewhere handy I should be OK. Weird though and still needs fixing properly.

Thanks again - saves a lot of tedium!

Thank you. I could deal with the no new notes but was getting incredibly frustrated with not seeing old notes as I migrated to Bear.

I can't even find my library file. I moved it to iCloud and the path to the database is correct in the settings. If I right click on a note and choose "Show in Finder", it just brings one of the already open Finder windows to the front, not even the iCloud folder.
