Having multiple types of cells is (in my opinion) a brilliant solution to the fact that no format is perfect for all situations. I had always figured that having LaTeX available meant that if I ever needed something really hard to do in Markdown, I always have a big gun that I could pull out. I ran into a situation tonight where LaTeX would have solved a problem that nothing else could solve, but I couldn't get it to work. In fact, I tried several examples from http://www.texample.net, and not a single one worked.
Responses to other LaTeX-related issues seem to suggest that LaTeX cells don't actually provide complete support, but instead a small subset. In that case, it would be very helpful to
use a different name that doesn't create the expectation of full LaTeX support, and
provide examples of what can be done and how it can be done. (The only thing showing up when searching in the Help menu was a reference to the Convert to LaTeX cell menu item. I eventually figured out that MathJax examples should work, but it would be helpful for this to be more readily available through the UI or through the Help menu.)
(Alternately, complete LaTeX support would work too, although I have no idea whether that's a monumentally large task, or a simple matter of including an existing library and doing a little debugging.)
