Occasionally receiving notifications Slide despite notifications being disabled in app #2910

Slide version: 5.9-alpha2 Android version: 9.0

I have a Pixel 2 running Android Pie and the latest beta of Slide. However I also have the official reddit app and a couple other third-party apps installed too. I wanted to try Boost (sorry ccrama) for a couple days so I decided to disable Slide's notifications under Settings > General > Notifications. However despite being disabled sometimes I will still receive notifications simultaneously from both Boost and Slide.

I have a feeling this could be related to the notification channels. Do I have to disable Slide's notifications at the OS level? If so what is the purpose of the "Check for new messages" box in Android Oreo and newer?
