curl in nacl dev environment does not work correctly with VPN #150

Trying to copy files from an HTTP server on my corp workstation.  Without VPN, 
curl fails with "curl: (6) Couldn't resolve host xxxxxxxx"

When I'm on VPN it goes for about 2 minutes without transferring anything, then 
gives up with "curl: (55) getpeername() failed with errno 107: Socket is not 
connected"

to clarify: this was a chromebook using Google OpenVPN
