How to decide what is the artwork in complicated cases #42

Closed baskaufs closed 2 years ago

baskaufs commented 2 years ago

See https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_sum_of_all_paintings . The ACT item http://diglib.library.vanderbilt.edu/act-imagelink.pl?RC=49616 is a crop of the larger artwork https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q220859 so I probably shouldn't have created an item for the crop https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110561832 . However, there isn't an ACT item for the larger work as far as I can tell.

Changed name from "Wedding shoe is part of a larger artwork" to broaden the issue.

@cylew @AnneRichVU I couldn't tell if you were able to make the call but here are some notes

The 2022-06-13 meeting of the ARLIS/NA Wikidata call dealt with this issue. The speaker, Lozana Rossenova lozana.rossenova@tib.eu is a very knowledgeable Wikimedian with experience in Wikidata, Wikibase, and Commons. She also is on the OpenRefine development team. They have been dealing with a lot of these issues in their work to integrate Commons data uploads in OpenRefine (a current project).

She gave an opinion about 3D works that seems sensible: unless the photographer of the work is famous (e.g. the photograph was in an exhibition) don't worry about creating an item for the photograph. She was actually of the opinion that in the galaxy case, there should just be an item for the galaxy, with P31 "galaxy" and not worry about the photograph.

She felt that for prints, it makes sense to list the various catalog numbers of the copies rather than creating new items for them all, although that isn't the practice that everyone is following and she also expressed the opinion that it's better to err on the side of more data rather than less.

For illuminated manuscripts, there should probably just be one item. She doesn't see an issue with multiple image (P18) claims if they illustrate different views of the object (vs. multiple tourist photos of the Mona Lisa), even though there seems to be a general feeling in the Wikidata community that an item should have one image property of the most representative example.

She also commented that it would be very beneficial to carry out this discussion on meta pages. I asked what the best one would be and she said that for these issues, it would be best to have the discussion on Commons. She mentioned Sandra Fauconnier (Wikimedia Commons) as an important potential contact who is in the middle of these issues. She is a leading force behind Structured Data in Commons. She may be the speaker at an upcoming meeting.

She also mentioned an interesting property that I hadn't heard of before: work with multiple execution or something like that (can't find it). That could be useful for prints, maybe.

Here's a followup email I got from Lozana:

From: Rossenova, Lozana Lozana.Rossenova@tib.eu Date: Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 8:17 AM To: Baskauf, Steven James steve.baskauf@Vanderbilt.Edu Subject: RE: Followup questions from the ARLIS call today Hi Steven,

Thanks for following up! And glad you found the discussion yesterday useful. I was also curious to learn more about the specific problems that you have to tackle – especially valuable when thinking about the connections between Wikidata <-> Wiki Commons.

Here’s the multiple executions class item > https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q28886448 > it’s actually a class rather than a property and to get the sense of how it’s been used in various cases, I recommend checking out this page: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:WhatLinksHere/Q28886448

Regarding your second question – I have a meeting with Sandra to talk about OpenRefine uploads to Commons this evening, so will ask her if there is already a space on Commons where we can lead the modeling discussions, or if she can start one, which I can then share with you and the rest of the group.

Many thanks & looking forward to joining the group in future meetups too, it was fun discussing complex data modeling issues with everyone!

Cheers, Lozana

Steve,

It's interesting to learn about the new subclass, the multiple executions. Based on the examples of this class shared by Lozana, most of them are the caricatures published by Vanity Fair. I wonder if it can be used as one of the "instance of" properties for William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job. His illustrations come in three sets, two engravings, and one watercolor. In addition, I'm curious if the multiple executions can be included in the statement to indicate several photos of the same 3D artwork are available.

I'm excited to know how this subclass can help us to specify the various versions of the same artwork.

Thanks, Charlotte

Unfortunately, I missed most of the call, but the call notes for the July 18 ARLIS/NA Wikidata call are loaded with suggestions and we need to look them over carefully when we have time.

Key bit of info:

combo of three statements (Items portrayed in this file depicts, digital representation of, main subject) and using {{Artwork}}, {{Art photo}}, {{Information}}, or {{Book}} → that is a trigger for the template to pull info from wikidata, info that is multilingual!

I think we've learned about all that we can here and this issue will serve as a future reference. So I'm closing it.

Thank you!
