Happens as of 16.0.5. Even easier to test now that there's a card that straight up steals his weapon. https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/e8ut6r/stealing_the_lich_kings_weapon_causes_him_to_be/faepfnx/

I was allowed to swing with the weapon, and I believe it broke once I cleared his board of the frozen champions.
