Slime/Xenobio on the NSS Eternal #109

So slimes are telepathic, demonstrably sentient, and amoral. They have no concept of wrongdoing, effectively being children. Not all crew would be happy about this.

We're still imprisoning them, starving them, killing them. Sure, it's not something NT would have any scruples about, but why do we still study them? They're pre-Gate. They're old news. We know everything there is to know about them, at least biologically. Their psychology is a whole other field.

I'd like to reduce the reliance of xenobiology upon slime experimentation, and remove the slimes from the lab in the longer term entirely. However, I'd like to have modified slimes living in the maint tunnels here and there, without a starvation mechanism (implication - they feed on rodents), and with only a tiny chance of attempting to feed upon players unless first attacked.

Xenobio is a place for something new, now. Notably players suspected of Gate influence grins

It's no longer just an autopsy lab and holding cell for a single type of species. Not on the Eternal.

As for the slimes - they may prove useful, in time. Their rapid breeding in labs across the galaxy seems to have accelerated their development. That telepathy trick seems very useful. Some speak of casual domestication, even of friendship, and feral populations are growing in several larger space habitats, and even on some planets.

Mappers, spriters, coders, all - weigh in with ideas here or on Skype on how you'd like this done.

Preferably in some manner that the players actually understand, instead of seeing the slimes are gone and immediately assuming the lab is now for obscure roleplay only, followed by never using it again. Kind of exactly like the Psychologist.

How about collapsing Xenobiologist into Scientist like all the other subsets and granting all scientists access to xenobiology, so that all scientists can do all the science things as and when they're relevant, without access restrictions or obligations?

Thus xenobios can work anywhere on anything, and only xenobio when there are xenos to bio?

I support this option.
