This wasn't exactly intended as an "audio" issue. We were going more for hearing damage and chatbox notifications, area hailers, that kind of thing... though, some sound effects may get included for certain items. The cold deadness of space still appeals to me though, so don't expect the supermatter engine to drone on all round as an engineer, or the drills to be constant cacophony as a miner.
Very low priority and a very big workload. Not many of us are skilled in working with audio or sourcing/making good files for it.
NOISE is a code property of items that emit a LOUD AS FUCK noise for some period of time across ticks/seconds until they are turned off or otherwise deadened. They cause temp deafness (resisted by earmuffs/similar), can be heard from long distances to lesser effect, and block out vocal communication (say, comms, etc). Examples include a single blast from projectile weapons, a short but sustained burst from industrial drills, some types of engine as a constant low-grade roar, a new object called a loud hailer that broadcasts to an entire area / large region, and so on.
In general, we're looking to make the in-game sound systems more robust, including quieter sounds... subtle sounds. This could eventually burgeon into a milestone with the audio label, but for now, we just want to look into items that produce deafening/overtalking NOISE.
