Mice Eat Cables #92

Open Davnik opened 9 years ago

This is (hopefully) a distant backburner project. We would like to induce a capability for player-controlled mice to chew through exposed power cables, likely killing themselves, and annoying the crap out of some humans. NPC/AI mice would not have this capacity, because they are dumb, but player mice are literally Jerry... if not his cousin, Mighty Mouse. If you are unfamiliar, you had no childhood.

We'd need logs for this as this could be easily abusable.

Aye, logs will be vital. Good call. And yes, sounds like a great idea. Discussed with Jakk? On 12 May 2015 02:12, "CitationNeeded" notifications@github.com wrote:

It was an idle suggestion from my partner, Freya. I am against players having this ability as mice without a significant overhaul, for example an automated self-heating function for wire networks, and we're in no position to develop that.

Perhaps if NPC mice had a small diceroll probability of snipping a piece of wire in the surrounding 5 squares within that room every # ticks or somesuch. Very low chance. Something to keep the engineers occasionally busy and lured into dark tunnels.

Oh, um, yes, I did intend for the mice to have a long cooldown on cutting cables, perhaps only one in a given mouse's lifetime, or only one cable cut every 15 minutes by any mouse?

I'm against NPC mice having this at all. Even if it statistically only happens every few rounds, there have always been enough bugs in engineering that we don't need people jumping the gun to call shuttles because "tators with powersinks!"

Davnik commented 9 years ago

Assigned to Phase 2 but still entirely optional.

staticcharged commented 9 years ago

I think if we do it, the chances of a mouse surviving chewing through a cable should be slim.... like a 10% chance of survival.

Well, considering the power coursing through those cables must be rather significant. It's not like it's through the fan on your computer.

Instead of snipping through the wire, which can be a horrid pain for everyone (potentially cutting power to the whole station, being impossible to locate and fix) Turn a wire into a fire/shock hazard and/or powersink.

How this would work, is the mouse would chew a wires insulation through, dying in the act. The singular wire would still function as normal, but would occasionally spark, shocking or flashing nearby mobs, potentially igniting flammable gasses, and sapping a bit of energy from the system. Say 20% of the wires power networks energy is lost every time it sparks, And it cuts off the power network temporarily. This could make lights connected to apc's connected to it flicker every time it sparks, and reduce station power efficiency, without being a huge pain to locate and repair.

I presume there's a cooldown for spawning as a rodent anyways. So killing the thing that bites it is cooldown enough.

I like your idea, however a part of our inclination is to aim our server at being more Player Vs. Station. So having a power grid shutdown would be .... "most unfortunate"... but I doubt we would want the whole station to go dark.
