i think this is something I didn't have the ability to focus on in my prototype, because everything going on in the background was fairly complex (which I think you've nailed, btw!).
I'd prefer, for the sake of legibility and presentability, that the text blocks aren't allowed to overlap the icons. right now you have them scrolling as page content, but the approach that makes sense to me would be that they fade in and out in fixed positions based on scroll position.
