While waiting for your proposed complete rewrite of the extension, I decided to take matters in my own hands and added a small addition to make custom files possible via settings.
My reasoning for doing this is that it will give the community more time to think and discuss about what direction to go in, while letting power users (such as myself) become even more powerful.
I think this is a nice low-cost, low-risk intermediate solution. :)
