Any change to the whole production line will set all the input / output / factories etc to 0 in the alien plantlife sample block. This is triggered by stuff like changing production building, modules, adding or removing recipes. The fix is to swap between matrix & computing by element.
Can be easily reproduced by creating new production line, selecting Biome science. Adding a recipe for Alien plant-life sample (Desert garden, unknown if this is crucial), create a new block from that recipe, then adding the recipe for desert garden in that block.
Just having the desert garden recipe in the first original block does not break it, it has to be in its own block.
I don't like it but that is by design. Anything that is produced and consumed in the same block doesn't link by default. You can force it to link by Ctrl + Clicking on the product.
