Open Source License #24

Closed philhoefer closed 9 months ago

It was said that the project will get an open-source license after the full release of the Volla phone. With the Volla project now declared as completed I'm creating this as a tracking issue.

The plan seems to be to draft a open-source-compatible 2.0 version of Volla's own "Volla License". I don't think this is necessary and may make the project harder to work with. The OSI has a list of well-known open-source licenses.

As far as I can see, this currently blocks the inclusion in F-Droid.

With Volla OS 10 we have prepared the publication of the system repositories. We'll do this step by step.

Hello, please still consider this. I'd love to not just play around with the source, but also share my changes, which I am forbidden by the Volla license.

wurzer commented 2 years ago

You are welcome to share your changes and create a pull request. Thanks for that motivating post.

Yes, it's possible to share changes, but it's an unfavorable one-way contribution. The contribution does not benefit the open-source community at all, as the license of the project is a proprietary one.

I will add my vote here to change the license into a public one. I was quite surprised to see the restrictive license of the software.

How do you motivate it? I only think it will be a burden to the project.

wurzer commented 9 months ago

Some parts are published under GPL others under Volla License. The primary goal is to create transparency. At the same time, we want to motivate developers to participate in the Volla project. Source code under Volla license can be modified and built for your own personal use, but not shared or distributed. We will continue to develop the license to find the best balance between free use and protection for commercial exploitation that allows us to continue the project.
