Volla UT very energy consuming #108

Open gbdomubpkm opened 3 years ago

gbdomubpkm commented 3 years ago

The Volla UT is very energy consuming in normal operation (without tricks to slow down the consumption), cellular data activated in 4G.

In almost identical use the Volla Volla OS requires for me a recharge every 3 days whereas for the Volla UT, a recharge every 24 H is necessary in spite of the impressive battery of 4700 mAh.

Turning off cellular data when it is not needed is the most effective way to save battery power on Volla UT today: phone and sms remain operational.

If I understand correctly, work is underway to significantly improve the battery life.

I'm opening this issue to get a benchmark of information on the progress of the work that you would like to share with us. Thank you

Adding to this my recent observation: I have fully charged the device yesterday morning, and since then the phone was just lying on my desk without being used. There are no open apps besides teleports, the device is connected to a 5GHz wifi network, and no sim card is installed.

I just took a look at the battery and its at 51%. This means it drains half of the battery in less than 24h without being used.

I don't have this experience: I can easily get 3 days of battery life with Ubuntu Touch (release candidate channel) on the Volla Phone. The device is connected to the mobile network and to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. I wonder what's different between our configurations.

patrickjane commented 2 years ago

I'm currently charging again and I switched to a 2.4GHz network. Lets see if its changing anything.

Might note that I also enabled developer mode since I am using the device for development.

Any news on this?

patrickjane commented 2 years ago

Did some more tests.

1) fresh reboot, no open apps, flight mode Phone goes to 94% battery after 4 days

2) fresh reboot, no open apps, no SIM card installed, connected to 2.4GHz wifi Phone went to 50% after 24 hours.

3) no open apps, no SIM card installed, connected to 5GHz wifi Phone went to 33% after 30 hours.

4) no open apps, SIM card installed, wifi disconnected Phone went to 75% after 56 hours. Mobile internet is disabled (only calls/sms).

I am on OTA-19.

This basically means the phone is barely usable as daily driver, with the battery draining that fast, without even using the phone.

The phone lies on my desk, 2m distance to the wifi access point (Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-PRO ceiling mounted, clear line of sight).

Yes, to minimise battery consumption and therefore extend battery life, this currently requires 'smart management' of cellular data activation, i.e. when needed, which is not a natural operation. And fortunately the battery is powerfull !

patrickjane commented 2 years ago

Not sure what you mean. I think that the wifi power consumtion is just way too high. And of course no one wants to switch to mobile data when wifi is available, that doesn't make sense.

gbdomubpkm commented 2 years ago

@patrickjane Sorry, let me clarify. I wasn't talking about wifi usage, which I don't use continuously like you, to make an opinion, but only cellular data through the SIM card.

patrickjane commented 2 years ago

I haven't benchmarked mobile internet via SIM card since I only have a prepaid card without internet traffic. Therefore I cannot test it. However, without internet usage, the battery usage seemed okay to me (see above). Maybe you can add a measurement from 100% battery with enabled mobile internet (and no open apps, no device usage) so I can add it above.

gbdomubpkm commented 2 years ago

I agree with you, with no cellular data activated, battery usage is ok. For an accurate measurement, I will see if I can as the Volla is my daily internet phone. In any case, roughly speaking, one 'full' per 24/30 hours on average with moderate internet use.

gbdomubpkm commented 2 years ago

...and it should be noted that I rarely let the battery drop below 10% because the smartphone becomes less reliable and the system settings cannot be changed.
