When your phone has a pass code/passphrase and you attempt an action that requires elevated privilege (e.g. opening the terminal or installing some apps), a modal is shown to ask for it.
When it happens, the fingerprint reader cannot be used, which means you have to type your pass. Security wise, it looks like a good idea. In terms of user experience, it might not be so good though, because I was in the process of setting up my phone, and I was prompted to type my long passphrase over and over again. Eventually, I decided to switch to a shorter 4-digit pass code, which isn't nearly as secure (although another solution would be to store the passphrase in a keypass of some kind and copy paste it).
It would be practical if the fingerprint reader could also be used for these prompts.
