Is it / would it be possible to use the HDMI output from a USB-C dock #13

Would it be possible to use a USB-C dock to provide HDMI support and potential for a desktop environment? I have tried an Anker 7 in 1 dock and it detects the card reader and USB ports but the HDMI output is not. I could well be barking up the wrong tree but the RK3399 has a reasonably strong GPU built in so I was hoping to get access to it via a dock.

I was poking around last night trying to get vnc or an rdc session going. You can install a desktop environment through armbian-config. Going to try again today.

I tried installing a desktop environment but I believe https://github.com/HelmSecure/armbian-images/issues/10 is blocking the install as I can never get it to complete as it hangs.

To answer the original question, then if it’s a USB->HDMI connection then it will almost certainly work if it works on other Linux setups. If it’s trying to get thunderbolt or DisplayPort over the USB-C connector then it likely won’t.

I have a Steam Deck and the USB-C hub works with that and I can view the screen output via HDMI so I'm taking the assumption it will work on this if I can manage to get the desktop installed.

Steam deck likely supports DisplayPort out so it doesn’t tell you a lot. You could check on any computer (probably including the steam deck) if it shows up as a USB display adapter or a DisplayPort display.

USB-> HDMI adapters can be had for $15-20 on Amazon if it comes to it.
