fix issue with `configure` on OSX #65

I couldn't build locally on osx without this

I have merged fedff78 and 64f7817, thanks! Regarding c954289: I think we had the same code in an ARM-Mac feature branch before realizing it is not needed because /usr/local/include resp. /usr/local/lib are in the default include resp. library search paths anyway. We have tested the current version of ./configure on Intel as well as ARM Macs, and it worked for us in all cases. Please give more details on the errors that you get and the versions that you have installed so that we can understand what is happening in your case.
