Can you add a test for these changes? Overall it looks fine, but I would like to run it against a test as well.

There is a test. in tests/unit/test_api.js, the last file in the PR

Strange.. when I first pulled down and ran the tests, it didn't run.. so I thought it wasn't yet ready. Nonetheless, it is all working now. Green lights on this one. Merge away!
