Upload of photo causes hang of site (trying to contact server)

1.Upload photo (attached offending item)
2.That's it ;-)
3.Done from member page

Browser 'spins' trying to contact the server. No errors are returned

Version 0.1.7 

[What version of WordPress are you using?]
2.9.2

[What is the URL of your web host?]
www.1and1.co.uk

problem?]
www.wilsher-net.com (not public, can provide temp login if required)

[Do you know how to use phpMyAdmin?]
yes

[Do you know how to edit PHP code?]
yes

Image uploads fine using media gallery.

I cannot reproduce this on a test server, even with aggressive testing. 

1) Install FireFox
2) Install FireBug
3) Activate FireBug and open the console
4) Do the sequence of events that causes the problem.
5) Are there any errors shown in the console? If so, what are they?
