https://github.com/nielsmh recommended going with a binary tilemaps, and I personally don't know of any.

Pros:

Once implemented, it's easier to make a custom map editor
Tiled is no longer free, so it's cheaper for a potential map editor Con: It has to be implemented from bottom up.

Here's a contender, though I'm hesitant to include more libraries than SDL2.

As Tiled is now payed, I'd much prefer to make my own, in turn it'll also be better tuned to what we need 🤔
