Updated pictures so they show instead of making you click on them; will do so with all of my other entries.
It really does seem like a tall order to get metatiles working from their RTW behavior, considering how alien they generally are. If it helps, if it ever gets developed, one good stress test is Lemarquis's hex classic "True Magix". Will link it here because I'm a nerd.
In RTW, there are many special tiles that you otherwise cannot gain access to in the main editor. Some of these tiles, such as spikes with above-usual delay (See: KOOKY102), (possibly infinite bridges,) buttons that act like something else (haven't tried gates; see KOOKY090), and empty spaces that you can walk on can in fact walk on. However, many metatiles, such as (reg/fire) shadow stinker spawner gates (KOOKY123, JUTOMI046), as well as many other invisible metatiles, i.e. tiles that function just like other tiles in game like springs and conveyorbelts, except they look like empty tiles; see: KOOKY) simply do not work like they're supposed to (SEE: KOOKY099, KOOKY090). [NOTE: DO NOT TRY OPENING THESE LEVELS IN THE EDITOR AS THEY CRASH BOTH THE VANILLA AND W+ VERSION. USE THE CRUMPET EDITOR INSTEAD.]

Note: I have not been able to test this with many metatiles, including the default-glitched transporters, as well as the transporters that leave behind trampoline logic. (TBF I haven't even tried out broken/mismatched gates, but I imagine they work if mismatched buttons are anything to go by.)
