Annoyingly, this includes the periodic "refresh" that the monitor does automatically in order to avoid burn-in issues. This means that every few hours, the monitor will (seemingly) randomly turn itself off, forcing me to reboot right then and there if I want to continue using the computer.

Switching to a different TTY and back again resets xrandr/xorg or something and gets things working again. No need for further intervention.
