loading data is inefficient #1053

Our software is very inefficient at loading data. The screen shot below shows that the software is using 12 GB to load stage damage functions. Long loading times. I think this is reading the xml and displaying the data.

after we compute stage-damage, it seems like the software stops responding as it loads the functions
