Try changing the following setting from false to true for your firefox and
thunderbird.
> gfx.direct2d.disabled
You can change the setting from about:config.

I tried this myself and still can't seem to have GDIPP working on Firefox the
same way I'm seeing text in Safari browser. Wished if GDIPP gives me the same
"Strong" setting which Safari offers in its browser in FF5 but I don't have any
at all in FF so far :(

Changing "gfx.direct2d.disabled" to "True" have worked for me.

It does indeed work, but Firefox with "gfx.direct2d.disabled" feels incredibly
slow in comparison to Firefox without "gfx.direct2d.disabled". :/
Is there no other way to achieve proper text rendering in Firefox 4+?

very true, with that to true its slow and with it false its much better but
gdipp doesnt work then

That about:config entry just switches the HW acceleration on and off without
updating the checkbox in the settings.
Disable HW accel in Firefox' settings to achieve the exact same effect if you
don't feel like messing around in about:config.

The font rendering doesn't work for me at all in any firefox version,
enabling/disabling hardware acceleration doesn't affect anything.
