. Here is the full list of variables currently available from MAP study in IALSA data files

In regards to the conversation in #4 about health measures:

MAP and measures of health.

After reviewing #3, here's what i've found on health in MAP data we have. Considering your comment, @ampiccinin

The other thing to keep in mind is that while we have all the OCTO data (as far as I know) and can download pretty much all of HRS and ELSA, we have only the variables we have already requested for LASA and MAP, which means that we do not have immediate access to just any variable. I suppose if you will be there they will give you priority, but it would be best to double-check now that you have all the variables you will want.

I am considering MAP as a "no" in regards to the "self-rated health" health presence. I do, however, want to list the item that can potentially substitute or approximate or ever related to overal health:

Here are their frequencies in the files that we have:

@ampiccinin , I moved your comment here.

They also have the following. I could request variables 34-37:

Question 34: QUALITY OF LIFE. 1.

As compared to other people your own age, would you say that your health is excellent, good, fair or poor?

Allowable Codes: 1 = "Excellent" 2 = "Good" 3 = "Fair" 4 = "Poor"

Question 35: 2.

Now, thinking about your physical health, which includes physical illness and injury, for how many days during the past 30 days was your physical health not good?

Question 36: 3.

Now, thinking about your mental health, which includes stress, depression, or problems with your emotions. For how many days during the past 30 days was your mental health not good?

Question 37: 4.

During the past 30 days, for about how many days did poor physical or mental health keep you from doing your usual activities, such as self-care, work, or recreation?

Question 322: 19.

Are you able to take care of making your own doctor appointments and going to see your doctor and other health care providers completely by yourself or does someone else help you?

Allowable Codes: 1 = "No help" 2 = "Help" 3 = "Unable to do"

Question 353: 3.

How often have you used home HEALTH CARE or a visiting nurse?

Allowable Codes: 1 = "Never" 2 = "In the past, but not currently" 3 = "Currently, less than once a month" 4 = "Currently, 1 to 3 times a month" 5 = "Currently, once a week" 6 = "Currently, 2 to 4 times a week" 7 = "Currently, 5 or more times a week"

@ampiccinin , I think it's a good idea. 35.1 and 35.2 will give us two proxies for self-reported health, and others could be entered in some composite health score if we will be developing one for harmonization. It will not take long to incorporate the new variables into the grooming flow of https://github.com/IALSA/MAP. How fast did they respond to you in the past?
