Please note that this builds on #30; please follow this link to see a direct comparison of that branch with this one. These proposed changes seek to provide a initial approach to issue 28.

Proposing to close (without merge, that is) this P.R. and its predecessors, #29 and #30, in light of the updated approach to handling filters. Do you think so also?
