Fonts in existing files corrupted post upgrade to 16.28 Powerpoint on Mac #269

Closed Kapsbajaj closed 4 years ago

Kapsbajaj commented 4 years ago

Updated Office on Mac over the weekend and found all existing files having multiple cases of Fonts corrupted where IBM Plex Sans is used. Tried with multiple existing files. Powerpoint version is 16.28 (19081202) and Mac version is 10.14.6

mjabbink commented 4 years ago

we are having similar reports come in with Keynote and PPT users as well. @BoldMonday can you guys investigate this. Several people have pinged me on Plex not longer working well (layered and strangely spaced) or crashing their keynote constantly.

in some cases this was the specs: MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) MacOS 10.14.6 Keynote v9.1 (6369) IBM Plex Mono v2.00 IBM Plex Sans v2.0 IBM Plex Sans Condensed v1.1 IBM Plex Serif v2.1

In others: Brand new MacBook pro 15 inch laptop: Latest version of PPT

Plex layered and spaced way out in the menu and in use inside PPT.

Similar but slightly different — InDesign CC no longer recognizes the "older versions" that have been installed for a while. Certain glyphs in Keynote (Totem Rebus, for example) now show a question mark.

@seth the totem has been removed and having old versions of the font is not great practice with any font. I recommend removing all older versions. Opening those files should be fine as it should still find Plex. All the naming is the same hence issues. Font names do not have version in them.

We removed IBM logo and rebus for legal issues since it’s an open source typeface.

mjabbink commented 4 years ago

@Kapsbajaj Please check to see if you have multiple versions of Plex installed, This can can serious problems as you describe.

We’re looking into the problem to see if Plex is the source of the problem.

mjabbink commented 4 years ago

remember all. IBM CIO pushes an install and should delete old files but there may have been an issue with that deployment as well. We’ll be looking into that as well.

mjabbink commented 4 years ago

@Kapsbajaj I’m running PPT v16.27 and have no issues. Is your update a later version?

GilesNorman commented 4 years ago

I'm getting font corruption issues, too, exactly as described with scrambled characters (e.g. "ABC" becomes "xyz") and slightly random spacing, including some character overlays.

I'm running PPT 16.28 (just installed) on macOS 10.14.6

For all of us who had to sign up for GitHub just to weigh in on this string - is there a simple solution to fix this? I can't open up any PPTs, they all appear in gibberish.

GilesNorman commented 4 years ago

I called the IBM Mac Support desk with a font issue and they resolved it for me via remote takeover in about 10 minutes.

mjabbink commented 4 years ago

Sounds like it’s not font corruption if IBM MAC support resolved the issue. We are still exploring if plex has issues

sethjohnsonIBM commented 4 years ago

I suspect it’s a CIO issue. Many of my teammates have files (mostly Keynote) that look great on their laptops but are wonky on mine. My teammates aren’t the best at staying up to date with stuff on the Mac@IBM app.

I am good at frequently updating my system via the Mac@IBM app, and I started noticing problems late last week when I ran a standard Mac@IBM update.

I experienced the same problems with the fonts looking corrupted. I manually updated to the latest Font release from this GitHub page on my mac and then completely relaunched PowerPoint (not just close the deck...had to exit the program completely). Then it was resolved.

krcloyd commented 4 years ago

I am using Powerpoint 16.27 and having the same issue.

In most cases we’re finding double install of Plex. Please make sure you only have have one version of Plex and course the latest

Hi @Kapsbajaj, @krcloyd, @sethjohnsonIBM, @GilesNorman, @asabilia,

Summary of issue: Issue arises when new fonts are installed while user has running an application that uses the previous versions of the fonts as they are loaded in application cached memory. When user reloads the file or opens a new file while the application is running, the text appears like gibberish.

Solution: Quit and restart the application. Additional troubleshooting includes restarting the machine or manually clearing the font cache. Those experiencing font issues with adobe products, this article outlines some great troubleshooting steps: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-fonts-mac-os-x.html

Hi @sethjohnsonIBM, regarding InDesign and IBM Ples Sans (OTF) no longer recognized,

Summary of issue: Issue arises when Adobe InDesign file using IBM Plex OTF no longer recognizes IBM Plex v1.4.1. and user receives notification of the missing OTF files.

Note: In this scenario all v1.4.1 OTF fonts are replaced by TTF and InDesign file indicates OpenType properties are not applicable.

Solution: If OpenType PS is required, remove IBM Plex TTF files and download and install IBM Plex v2.0 OpenType OTF here: https://github.com/IBM/plex/releases/download/v2.0.0/OpenType.zip

twardoch commented 4 years ago

macOS, Adobe apps and Microsoft apps on macOS cache some info about the fonts' script coverage and other details.

Weird character replacement as shown in this thread happens sometimes if you replace fonts with same-named versions that have different glyph ordering and different Unicode coverage.

Cleaning font caches and OS restart fixes the problem — this can be done with https://www.jamapi.com/products/fontnuke/

mjabbink commented 4 years ago

@BoldMonday Worth investigating. It seems to be a Microsoft issue and/or a font conflicts but should double check to be certain.

BoldMonday commented 4 years ago

I think it is clear this is a caching issue with macOS when installed fonts are being updated.
