am I correct to understand that 1. Sign up for the Data Science Experience implies that I can't run this on my personal machine?

I think this is all open source, but was documented and tested with Data Science Experience. Most people will run it there w/ a free trial. If you were to try it on your own machine, you might find some setup isn't documented (I'm guessing the Spark setup).
