Proposal for a French localization #144

Open FALLAI-Denis opened 2 years ago

Description of the enhancement requested

I offer you as an attachment a "package.nls.fr.json" file for a French translation of Z Open Editor. File to drop at the root of the extension folder.

There is probably another way to do the translation so that it will be taken into account by the build procedures, but no information is available on this on the GitHub site.

I saw afterwards that there were many more files to translate in the /dist/src folder ...

Would it be possible to manage the translations in the form of child extensions to Z Open Editor, identical to what exists for VS Code itself with the "Language Pack" extensions? In this case you could provide and maintain an extension or reference kit, for English, which would then be derived to support other languages.

Thanks for putting the effort into translating the messages @FALLAI-Denis. These are indeed the most important strings that appear in the VS Code UI, but there are more for log file strings etc as you discovered. Localization is something that we do not have a budget for at the moment. The German strings I maintain myself as an easter egg to demonstrate that localization is possible, but it is currently not supported.

However, we have to discuss in our team if we want to start something similar to what we tried to kick off for Zowe Explorer using a site such as Zanata (which is not deprecated and we have to find something new) to which people can donate translations. The challenge will be to keep these updated for new releases. So far, we did not get any donations for Zowe Explorer either, which has by far more strings. We will discuss it and report here.

Hi,

Are there plans to switch localization management in ZOE to vscode-l10n?

This would probably make setting up translation files easier.

Thanks.
