What is the process for contributing samples? #36

Closed scotts closed 9 years ago

scotts commented 10 years ago

I have created two issues under "samples" for pulling in my two sample repositories (found at https://github.com/scotts/LogWatch and https://github.com/scotts/LogWatchUDP). However, I now suspect that no one monitors the "samples" repository.

So, several questions:

  1. Should I contribute samples by opening an issue under "toolkits"?
  2. If "yes" to 1, then what is the purpose of the "samples" repository?
  3. If "yes" to 1, then is "toolkits" the best name for this repository? Perhaps we should name it "administration" if it is for managing all issues related to tookits, utilities, samples and tutorials.

Creating the issue under samples was fine. I simply did not see it. I will respond to the issue under samples very soon.

You raise a good point about whether this repos is more an admin one for all Streams things under this organization or specifically for toolkits.

I think it would be easier if this repository was the single admin point for all of the repos under IBMStreams.

scotts commented 10 years ago

Agreed with @ddebrunner that a single admin point is easier. And if we use a single admin point, I do think "administration" would be a better name.

+1 on both of @scotts's points.

anyone against renaming the toolkits repository to administration?

This would then be used and monitored as the single place for all issues related to the administation of repos under the IBMStreams organization.

+1 administration

+1 administration

Will you remove the other top-level repos, samples, benchmarks, tutorials etc?

Only that now there is code in samples, that doesn't look like samples to me. I don't think general dumping grounds are a good idea. Seems the code there is related to HDFS so should be in some BigData, Hadoop or HDFS related repository.

hildrum commented 10 years ago

I think it makes sense to have a repository that provides a basic set of samples for someone new to SPL and wanting to try stuff out, so I think samples should stay.

That said, maybe the HDFSFormatter doesn't belong there, or maybe I should have named it "GenericCompositeSample" or "UsingOperatorsAsParameters".

Closing... I think this is resolved.
