What if we used just an element that's on top of the player with a background-color that animates its transparency?

I don't think our video player element supports a fade-out.

Should investigate how bsb does this

Addressed with latest commit, used an animated "curtain" element to handle fades. curtain exists below the game controls so only the video fades to black, not the controls.
