Example Color Palette.xlsx Here is an excel sheet that includes the customized color schemes, if folks want to play around with the different combos.
thanks, @bbaack!!! these look great.
@icpi-div/guidance-capacity-building have a look over these and let us know what you think by next Wednesday.
Hey @bbaack, I'm a big fan of Marine and the PPR style (no surprise there). I really like Elemental (another Excel standard)
We may want to start with one of these and make some tweeks to color in the palette once we have a decision on what to go with.
In the end, I think we should go with 3 palettes - a primary, secondary, and grayscale.
Let's see what other @icpi-div/guidance-capacity-building folks have in mind. It would be great to get feedback from folks today and we can review next week.
@bbaack , These are great! I like the ICPI-like scheme, except I wouldn't suggest we use red for something that is below target (bottom left graph) but then use it to show targets (upper left). I like the idea of having an ICPI-standard palette, perhap sit can look more like the top left graph that Aaron posted - maybe make the grey bars a lighter color or the targets a darker blue. I would leave red for something negative or to emphasize more drastic measures such as mortality (which i know we don't measure...but something along those lines..)
@bbaack & @icpi-div/guidance-capacity-building should we also have a recommended usage for types of color schemes? Would this mean that current tools should change their colors--i would say probably not, but maybe current tools can see if they need to be improved and new tools can use this to inform the color setup.
I think the primary concern is developing a coherent color palette first. It's nice if we have some general guidelines/suggestions around what colors to use for what, but I don't want to be too prescriptive since color choice/emphasis has a lot to do with the message you're trying to convey. The graphs above just show how the different colors in the palette look in action.
and ideally, it would be great to have all product, past and future look the same. it will be easier to make this suggestion for new products, but it would be nice if we can get current ones to adopt.
@shapaklyak and @achafetz, thanks for the great feedback. I agree with Aaron that we should focus on nailing the palette down first and maybe not be too prescriptive with how people use it. Aaron, is the PPR palette just a basic excel palette? I couldn't find elemental in my version, but I've also been a big fan of the median palette for quite some time. Personally, ICPI-like might be my favorite from the bunch (but I made and like them all), though it's a little on the safe side. I'm guessing it would be least objectionable to the masses. I gave it a test run with the Malawi POART and I think it worked well (bonus, it's colorblind friendly), though I will say by the end I really wanted a couple of additional colors, just to shake things up a bit. Happy to share the visuals (Aaron, you likely already have them). Github may not be the best forum.
If red/blue/grey is the way we want to go (and I'm still very open to other suggestions), Tableau also has a nice palette that'd be worth checking out.
great slides indeed @bbaack! I would post them to pepfar.net and then share the link here for others to access!
Sounds good. Maybe we can see if others have feedback..otherwise I would say we should send this around as a draft. Does it need to go through anyone else's review after this?
http://stephanieevergreen.com/choosing-a-color-picking-tool/ might be useful
@bbaack - as discussed on today's call it would be good to create theme or xml color palette files so we can add/play around with the color palettes in the workbook from earlier.
1) describes how to create/share an entire theme file (contains color palette along with fonts etc that work in powerpoint & word) https://wordribbon.tips.net/T013089_Making_a_Customized_Theme_Available_to_Others.html 2) talks both about themes as well as how to specifically alter just the xml color palettes in case you don't want to create a bunch of different theme files: https://policyviz.com/2017/01/12/150-color-palettes-for-excel/
@shapaklyak thanks-- i definitely looked at this site or something similar when working on this-- you'll note that the universally reviled swimming pool is a slightly modified version of the life aquatic palette. @kschlenker thanks for sharing, so sorry i didn't properly share these first time around.
all-- please use the attached txt files to play around on your own with the palettes, and feel free to post modifications or new palettes here. @kschlenker has provided instructions above (will need to be saved as xml files in the specified themes folder).
let me know what y'all think. our goal is to narrow this down to 3 or 4 choices, then get input from the wider div group.
ICPI-Like.txt Marine.txt Muted Blues.txt PEPFAR-like.txt PPR.txt Swimming Pool.txt
Hey @bbaack & @kschlenker ! Thanks for your work on this. Apologies for the delay, but just catching up after a week of dashboard updates. @bbaack, could you please upload the theme files for the above choices? I talked with @kschlenker and wasn't able to get it to convert to XML. Theme files would be much better so then we can apply it to Word, Powerpoint, etc.
Also, the OCM has proposed a tentative timeline to match with Sharepoint updates/organization of files per Clusters. This is a little tight but perhaps we can try to aim for it.
Timeline
Not to provide mixed messaging, but I think we should pump the brakes a bit here. While @bbaack provided this in November (and a big thanks for that), we really haven't had (m)any meetings to formally discuss due to the holidays and travel. If we institute anything I think we need to think (a) long and hard as a group and (b) have group discussion about color schemes.
While choices are great, I think we need to pair our color palette down to 3, including a primary one, secondary one, and then black and white. This will provide more standardization than having 6 schemes.
That's just my two cents.
Definitely agreed @achafetz on having a set of 3 or so options. I agree the timeline is quite tight, when would be a good time to have a discussion on this - at our next Tuesday GCB meeting or larger group today?
@shapaklyak Unfortunately, I don't think they're a supported file type on Github. I can post a document with the HEX/RGB codes if that is easier. Otherwise, I think you should be able to copy/paste from the above text files into an existing .xml theme? Let me know.
I'm a little late to the conversation, but agree with @achafetz that the above timeline doesn't work. Do we want the GCB to come to consensus on the top two palettes (plus a gray scale) by our next call? I think a couple of the above could work, but we might want to put a few more options forward. I'm fond of a lot of these palettes, but I'm not sure they all scream ICPI or PEPFAR to me.
Hi @bbaack & @achafetz ..it looks like @achafetz note didn't come through earlier from Tuesday, but I think you were on the call as well. We'll discuss the color palettes on Tuesday and come to consensus then move forward with a proposal to OCM. Also...will be talking about setting up a simple recommended mockup for structure/layout of tools on Tuesday, Jan 23 call.
Hi @bbaack, here is a website that allows you to upload pictures to simulate various types of color blindness: http://www.vischeck.com/vischeck/vischeckImage.php
Hi all. Here is an updated version of the marine color palette. I removed the green/yellow and replaced with two orange options. I also played a bit with the light beige to create a grey (with brown undertones) for the palette. Charts are just examples to try and show most of the colors. Let me know asap if this is in the right direction. @achafetz @shapaklyak @kschlenker
Here's another option that replaces the lightest blue (nearly identical to one of the teal shade that excel auto produces) with the green from the original marine. For consideration, might be too much.
@bbaack , these look great! I prefer the second option, the light blue in the first option seems too light and may be difficult to view sometimes in a presentation.
@bbaack is there an updated version, would you feel comfortable sharing during the all DIV meeting today or would you rather wait until next week?
@shapaklyak I am happy to share during the all-DIV meeting today. Is it best to share as a pdf with the four color scheme options? Do we all agree those are: 1) ICPI-like 2) PPR-like, 3) Marine v3 (with the green; any ideas for a name?!) and 4) Grey scale? @achafetz @kschlenker @icpi-div/guidance-capacity-building
@bbaack, i think the names can be TBD. I did find this which can be inspirational for naming the palettes. http://www.color-hex.com/color-palettes/popular.php . we could ask folks for ideas on names too during the 1pm call and then can finalize at our next Tuesday GCB call. thank you!
Hi All! Here are the four finalist color palettes for your review. I'm also attaching an excel file I used to create the charts if you'd like to play around. Your thoughts (general impressions, color substitutions, better palette names) before these move forward to leads are appreciated! @icpi-div/icpi-general

@shapaklyak @bbaack Hello there! Katya asked me to come up with some name suggestions. Here are some random thoughts.
PPR: Beach Day, Tidepools, Under the sea, Aqua Mist TBD: Forest Bath, Forest, Pinefeather, Autumn Woods, Mountain Pass
@kimisatoPC I think I just discovered another talent of yours.
I do not have a strong opinion against any of them but below is my order of preference of the color palettes: 1) TBD 2) ICPI-Like 3) PPR-Like
I’m annoyed no one liked the swimming pool color pallet. You guys are no fun.
I concur with Kimi’s color names. I do think we should consider making them rhyme.

I concur with Katie O's ranking. Aqua Mist and Mountain Pass sound like laundry detergent scents...and I don't hate it
I like all 4 of the color palettes @bbaack.
For names, I like Under the Sea and Autumn Woods - although another one that Kimi recommended was Earthstone or Earthtone for the TBD one.
Maybe grayscale = grayscale? :)
I would vote for TBD and vote against any palate that is more monotone in color.

thanks! @MicSherlock, btw... we're not voting on one specific one but instead your top 3 in order. thanks!
I don’t know that I really like any of the others. I’m thinking of the TSD specifically and the way that we have tried to color code that tool to represent different levels of analysis. Are we allowed to suggest an additional color pallet? ☺

Hi, this is what we are using for treatment tools…but we haven’t standardized the use depending on type of graph.

For what its worth, I like the ICPI and the PPR better than the TBD.
But TBH, I just wanted the opportunity to throw this in:

@MicSherlock, not sure if it's just my computer, but I'm not able to see the image you shared. Ideally, I'd prefer not to start over with completely new palettes at this time. However, your feedback that some of the other palettes are a bit monochromatic is well taken.
What do you/others think about an updated version of the ICPI-like palette? Completely unintentional, but this version incorporates all the basic color families as the TBD (pinefeather?) palette. This is one of my favorite color combos of all time, and it keeps the red/navy PEPFAR colors (which are hard to complement), but maybe it's a little too feminine?
@bbaack so this step worked to transfer themes (i realize we talked about xml files earlier...not sure if it was a computer or katya malfunction earlier)
I tried it out with @Yabayabadoo, saved one of your XLS files as a theme, then she had to paste the XML file in the appropriate folder. Only when she opened Excel, the saved theme showed up under her "Colors" within Excel, not under "Themes"...but semi-successful?
@shapaklyak I call a semi-success a success! Here are the four .xml color files. These aren't the full theme, but it should work to follow the above path and stick them in the theme colors folder. I don't know why I stupidly didn't think to stick them in a zip folder earlier. Let me know if it works!
@MicSherlock a couple of examples of what the ICPI-like v2 and TBD palettes could look like on the TSD.
Edited to add PPR example.
@bbaack i love it! it works. So the color palettes show up under Colors for both Word and Excel, but not Powerpoint. I was able to save ICPI theme on powerpoint though...but it makes the background blue (maybe we wait on powerpoint or leave it since there are some standards already- can discuss on Tuesday). I did start a set of instructions below.
Instructions_Save as a theme.docx (how i saved one of the themes to "Themes" in addition to "Colors") How to import Color Palettes into Microsoft Excel and Word.docx
I like forest bath, but does it have a fourth color? We are just about to add the 4th layer of inquiry into the tool and it will need a representative color.

Hey all, went through and did the test of importing @bbaack's zipped color palette folder. No problems experiences.
Converted the word doc into a Markdown for easier porability and reading on Github and posted both to a Color folder in the Documents folder on the repo. @shapaklyak, I made some minor tweaks and added more images.
@achafetz cool. Just saw it. thanks! i think one concern i had about using it in powerpoint is that it automatically turns the background a dark blue (at least with the ICPI-like one). There is a template for trainings/webinars but do we want think about how to use it in combination or a phase 2 project (or OCM task)? https://www.pepfar.net/OGAC-HQ/icpi/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx?RootFolder=%2FOGAC%2DHQ%2Ficpi%2FShared%20Documents%2FWebinars%2FICPI%20Webinar%20Template&FolderCTID=0x01200080CC6F83D1766F4D9E3497D4529EC74A&View=%7B94C838B2%2DE166%2D4122%2DB8B4%2D7BEB9E1BC12B%7D
