Summary of Request

Cotrimoxazole (CTX) is a life-saving therapy that prevents pneumocystis pneumonia in people with advanced HIV disease. It is recommended for all children with HIV <5 years of age. In children the medication may have other benefits. Cotrimoxasole provides some protection against malaria and diarrheal illnesses, which are important causes of mortality in this age group. We have evaluated uptake of CTX in adults using SIMS data but have not yet looked at the uptake in children.

Objectives

The mortality indicator may help identify SNUs where this intervention may save lives. We propose to evaluate the MER mortality indicator in SNUs where the data are good and where we expect malaria and diarrheal illnesses may be important causes of morbidity.
Then we would like to evaluate this with the SIMS (4.0) indicator: CEE #: S_02_28 Cotrimoxazole (CTX) [C&T PEDS] which evaluates the standard “Eligible pediatric patients have documented prescription of cotrimoxazole (CTX) according to national guidelines”.
Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia have geographic areas of high malaria presence, we would like to compare mortality in areas with low CTX coverage to the mortality indicator in places of higher coverage of CTX.

Just documenting that the CEE ID S_02_28 Cotrimoxazole (CTX) [C&T PEDS] in the description is referencing SIMS 4.0. Since we don't have access to 4.0 data yet, we'll have to use 2.0/3.0 data (FY16Q2-FY19Q1) for this analysis. The SIMS 2.0/3.0 CEE ID for “Eligible pediatric patients have documented prescription of cotrimoxazole (CTX) according to national guidelines” is F_02_23 Pediatric Cotrimoxazole (CTX) (C&T Peds)
