The source is the Estate Register at the Council for the Judiciary. Each court has its own public register of estates.

The Estates Register contains legal facts concerning open legacies. An estate 'opens up' as soon as the testator dies. Legal facts are, for example: statements of heirs who have accepted or rejected the inheritance, details of the notary involved in the settlement of the inheritance, details of the liquidator (a person appointed by the court to settle the estate, or to settle). Part of the liquidation of the estate is that an inventory must be drawn up. This provides an overview of the assets and liabilities of the estate. For example, creditors can check whether there is a positive balance and whether there are assets that can be sold. Creditors can use the estate register to find out who they should contact for access to the estate inventory.
