Updated toolbar to facilitate re-opening of R package library datasets #4108

I have been using it in the workshop. It is working well. Our use has been with climatic data, so quite long datasets, but not wide. And with multiple data frames.

  1. I propose we add the icon for the Data frame metadata.
  2. I realise this just leaves the script window with no icon. But that is different anyway, because it appears automatically when you use the script button on a dialogue.
  3. Could there be something a bit wider to separate the sets of icons. It is currently a very thin vertical line and is not so visible. But also it uses much less space than in other software, e.g. acrobat. I have watched people clicking the recall last 10 dialogues icon and they are very close to the data-frame icon.

I think 1 and 2 are done. For 3 I am not sure I clearly understand perhaps @rdstern can explain further, looks like it is a user experience issue. The current icons are sufficiently spaced so perhaps this is no longer an issue?

@N-thony can you allocate this after I have been able to discuss with @lloyddewit tomorrow.

I am keen to sort out the visual aspects as far as possible, before the beginners course that starts on 19 June.

a) Delete the copy and paste items. Paste isn't working yet - though I hope it will be soon. However having it on the Edit menu and possibly with a short-cut key, will be quite enough. We don't promote Copy/Paste particularly in R-Instat. b) Add a down arrow to the Log/Script window Icon. The first item is then Log/Script Window. It is checked when the Log/Script window is visible and not otherwise. The second is Show R Commands. It is possibly just a short-cut way of the Options > Output Window > Show R Commands.
c) Derek made some of the down arros a bit wider recently. Do the same for all the down arrows. Perhaps even all slightly wider still? (We have plenty of space. d) Maybe a Down arrow added to the Save Button. If so, then the first (main) item is Save Data. The second is Save Output Tab and the third is Save Script.

I am pausing now, because I wonder how we bave been saving the log file and what we should do now? It is all saved automatically when there is a backup. But what happens otherwise.

@Patowhiz I am progressively happier with the new toolbar.

I wonder if either of the following 2 items are reasonably easy to implement? (The second is now being done, so just consider item a) here. And this issue could be closed if/when just the R packages are remembered.) a) Could the Open From Library have a down-arrow, and remember the previous library items that were used? This would parallel the facility for ordinary open files? I realise this may be different for the R packages and the R-Instat options. If it is only easy for one of those cases, I would still take that. I would be happy if it could start with the first option, of the datasets from R packages and suggest just this option be implemented for now.

@derekagorhom is this an easy task for you to undertake? I am keen to start by knowing whether this is something you would easily be able to do, and perhaps do easily. Or do you need guidance at the start? @N-thony what do you think?

I still show item b) for completeness - but it is being handled elsewhere: b) There is already a down arrow on the Log/Script Window. Could there be an option there to Show R Commands. This would be a quick way of the option that is in the Tools > Options > Output Window? (This is now being implemented, but with a down arrow from the Output window icon, because that's where the commands and comments are shown. That is #8444.)

@rdstern you mean on the dialog itself? or the main form tool bar? or on the startup data view window?
