Merge v5.9.2 into IDR branch #1

First part of https://trello.com/c/bUgDRt5b/2-idr-bio-formats-050, this PR merge the upstream v5.9.2 into the branch used for IDR.

Last commit looks about right. As discussed today, mostly looking for green Travis check for the time being. Proposing to get this merged or directly push the last commit to master which will close this PR barring objections /cc @joshmoore @melissalinkert
