Thanks @amiraliemami! Rebased from main now.

Making it overlay or "temporary" when open and permanent when closed requires a good amount of refactor from what I can tell. Let's park that for a future PR. I did make it shrink back to small on a click away though. Maybe that is a sufficient compromise for now?
