Description and steps to reproduce [Required]

Cities Skylines seems to be under performing for the class of GPU the A770 is. When checking reporting tools while the game is running my GPU is showing full utilization (Cities is usually CPU limited) with 100% usage and VRAM near maxed. I have tried without mods which made it worse but with the minimum recommended mods like Load Screen mod and a few others I still only got just above 20FPS in a city of ~20k population.

I played cities skylines with latest drivers (4311 and 4335) and for me, the city lags during first load (with low fps) until at least half an hour later where it becomes smooth again, possibly due to shader building in the background. Also, try playing in full screen mode as borderless gaming always have issues especially for games below dx12.

Hey @blahaj-blast thank you for sharing your finding about Cities Skylines

We're already doing some research and internal debug so once we have done some testing we'll get back here with our findings

Talk to you soon!

I can confirm the A770 16GB punches below its weight in Cities Skylines (DX11 mode). Interestingly, I get ~45 FPS on maximum zoom, but zooming out a few clicks craters frame rates. Running a 12400F and LE card (not an AIB) on Win10 22H2, for reference.

Hey @ygugsa thank you for reporting your findings! Is this low FPS showing with the latest beta? (v.4575)

We will be adding this information to our internal report and keep you posted as soon as we get any update.

Talk to you soon!

@Karen-Intel Yes, this was the beta 4575 driver, I forgot to mention. I added the driver version screenshot. This was a clean install as well using DDU in Safe Mode. It's also not the confusingly-numbered WHQL 4575 driver that just dropped this afternoon.

If it matters, I have an LE card, not an AIB like @blahaj-blast.

I wonder if I should cut back on the number of assets or mods, or upgrade to a 13600K. One possible explanation is, since the game is built on Unity 3/4, the simulation is dependent on single-threaded performance, thus my all-core boost of 3.9 GHz is actually bottlenecking the game, especially since I subscribe to several CPU-intensive mods like TMPE, Realistic Population Revisited and 81 Tiles 2. A 13600K can be manually overclocked into the 5.3-5.4 range with proper cooling and undervolting.

If I have Firefox running alongside Cities Skylines, the frame rate tanks even more.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi @blahaj-blast I recently tested with V.4644 and the issue wasn't present anymore.https://youtu.be/mqIgE2gbZtE. Can you confirm on your end and let us know?

Thanks!

Joseph-Intel commented 1 year ago

Hi @IGCIT Would you be able to help and close this out? Customer can reopen if the issue still persists on their machine

ygugsa commented 1 year ago

Hi @Joseph-Intel, I've been doing some experimenting on my end, it seems shadows really bring down performance. I strongly recommend not closing this issue until I show you the screenshots, which will be ready tomorrow at the very latest. Thank you.

Also, is it possible for me to check off the additional 35 tasks, or can only the issue author do that?

Sorry for not getting back to you on this. I did attempt to see if the issue was fixed, but some of the mods or assets I was using seem to be broken so I can't really get comparable numbers.

That and with the next game on the horizon I really lost interest in the current game. Thanks for the work though.

That's understandable. I can take over for you, if you want. Hope you enjoy CSL2

blahaj-blast commented 1 year ago

Thanks, though I'm hoping I can get into Starfield before CS2. Lol

Keep at it, I'm sure it will be a while before CS2 is a full replacement for the current game. If I still had a ongoing city I definitely would take longer to switch.

I have my own city of about 7,000 Cims, but it's heavily modded and uses a custom map and theme. LODs, shadows and anti-aliasing seem to have the biggest performance hits, I wonder if the base clock of 2100 MHz is another bottleneck. God, I wish this game had XeSS or FSR, or at the very least, a DX12 port.

As for Starfield, good luck. Bethesda refused to give Intel early access and then gaslit them.

ygugsa commented 1 year ago

I've done some tests. For consistent results, I used the Clean-Up Crew scenario from the Green Cities DLC in all tests.

Arc Control driver version, performance tuning and other settings (Anti-aliasing has been removed from Arc Control and adaptive tessellation is automatically turned off when I exit the command center. According to the Discord, AT and AA settings don't work through software): Driver versionl Performance settings Command Center settings 3D overrides 1 3D overrides 2 3D overrides 3

Mod and ingame graphics options (I am using Skyve Beta 3.3.0.0, Patch Loader Mod 2.2.0, FPS Booster 0.9.1, Control It and Loading Screen Mod): Ingame gfx options Control It options LSM

I get a consistent 75 fps in most areas, bottoming out at 66 fps. Test run 1

For the second test run, I turned on anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing ingame. No real change to frame rate. Test run 2 graphics options Test run 2

I turned off AF and AA and experimented with different shadow settings.

Shadows Quality: Low and Shadow Distance: Very Far Shadows Quality: Low and Shadow Distance: Very Far

Shadows Quality: Medium and Shadow Distance: Very Far Shadows Quality: Medium and Shadow Distance: Very Farr

Shadows Quality: High and Shadow Distance: Very Short Shadows Quality: High and Shadow Distance: Very Short

Shadows Quality: High and Shadow Distance: Very Far Shadows Quality: High and Shadow Distance: Very Far

Shadows Quality: High, Shadow Distance: Very Far, and AF/AA enabled Shadows Quality: High, Shadow Distance: Very Far, and AF/AA enabled

Logically, it has to be shadows that is giving the GPU a hard time, at least when it comes to vanilla graphics settings. However, the cartoonish vanilla graphics have been a sore spot among PC users wanting more realistic graphics, myself included. So I did a fourth set of tests with Play It, Render It, Theme Manager 2.5 and Visibility Control 0.9.5. I set the time to 11:07 am in Play It, the CO Temperate theme (using Theme Manager), and no custom LUTs. I exported my Render It settings, you can find them here.

Shadows Quality: High, Shadow Distance: Very Far, Vanilla LODs Shadows Quality: High, Shadow Distance: Very Far, Vanilla LODs

Shadows Quality: Disabled, Vanilla LODs Shadows Quality: Disabled, Vanilla LODs

Shadows Quality: High, Shadow Distance: Very Far, Visibility Control Standard LODs Shadows Quality: High, Shadow Distance: Very Far, Visibility Control Standard LODs

Shadows Quality: Disabled, Visibility Control Standard LODs Shadows Quality: Disabled, Visibility Control Standard LODs

What I haven't tried: A CPU with faster single-core clocks (still on a 12400F), overclocking using ScatterBencher's Arc OC Tool.

How can I help complete the 35/44 uncompleted tasks, since blahaj-blast no longer wants to continue with the game?

Joseph-Intel commented 1 year ago

Hi @ygugsa This seems to be a different issue than the one described in this ticket. Would you be able to submit a new one? Please be clear in the description of the issue and what you want us to focus on. From my understanding as of now is that when using some mods and the game isn't performing as well as it should be. The tests i will be performing Non overclocked and will be testing against Nvdia. The new ticket will also be handled promptly and i will be looking out for it.
