Quantum Computing and its Future #138

Abstract Proposed Session For Discussion for Informal Meetup:

Gordon E. Moore, the co founder of Intel, proposed that the size of transistors would keep on reducing as the industry progresses every two years. Smaller transistors means smaller, faster and and more power saving computers. Today, transistors can be as small as 70 silicon atoms! But there is a limit to Moore's Law; to how small we can go. This is where Quantum Computers come in. They literally store bits in the form of the spin of a single electron or atom! Not only this, due to some quantum effects like quantum superposition, the electron/atom can have both states of the spin at the same time! This means an electron/atom used in quantum computer which stores the bits (also called qubits in this case) have both states 0 and 1 at the same time rather than keeping only one state o or 1 like a classical transistor. For eg: 2 bits in classical computer can store one of the 4 values: 00 or 01 or 10 or 11 but, 2 qubits store all these 4 values at the same time due to quantum superposition.

A discussion can be conducted on the development of such computers, the fields they could affect like security, research, are they worth it, are they scalable, their future/are they the future? etc.
