Describe the goal of the project.
The goal of the project is to understand patterns and environmental impact of deforestation by visualizing change in forest area cover over three decades and to find a relation between Soybean production in Africa and afforestation/deforestation rates.
Describe the data used or collected.
This project team uses global deforestation data which contains different set of information:
Forest area data - includes various sets of information such as forest area data
Brazil loss data - shows the loss of Brazilian forest across different years.
Soybean usage data - contains the soybean production usage data by year and country.
Vegetable oil data - provides information on vegetable oil production by crop type and year.
Deforestation by source - showcasing the farming entities to forest by year.
Describe how the research question will be answered, e.g. what approaches / methods will be used.
The first question demands the research of over 3 decades of forest area transformation in the provinces of Africa. The diversity of dataset requires data exploration and relation analysis in order to plot a descriptive visualization about how the production has evolved. This is presented in the form of a map (geological) visualization. The crux of which lies in appropriate data analysis using suitable package like dplyr.
The second question requires to look at the production rate of Soyabean crop for approximately 2 decades. This plan requires the involvement of forest data and the soyabean data. The soyabean_use dataset provides information about the consumption of soyabean, which further requires in-depth research to find out if any relations to production can be further found. This question is answered by a line graph in the end.
Is there anything that is unclear from the proposal?
1) The second question needs a clarification on how the consumption of soyabean (in human food, animal feed and processed food) reflect the rate of production of soyabean. The analysis and data engineering plan on correlating consumption with production seems far fetched. If possible, provide an outline to highlight the same.
Provide constructive feedback on how the team might be able to improve their project.
1) The vision with the second question's analysis seems interesting. You have provided a detailed plan to create a new variable for quantifying the production of soyabean, and it seems to come from variables that signify the consumption instead. It seems plausible to re-iterate the question and find more insights on the consumption rates instead of production since it is already given.
What aspect of this project are you most interested in and would like to see highlighted in the presentation.
1) We're interested to see how the use of packages will be handled in order to process and extract the information.
2) We are interested to see the visualization on the map in the finished version, with respect to the quantity of the information, and presentation of the variables.
Provide constructive feedback on any issues with file and/or code organization.
NA
(Optional) Any further comments or feedback?
The proposal description is extremely well-written and exhaustive. It gives the entire idea of the plan, scenario and use-cases.
We are looking forward to see the final presentation!
