Some years ago we came up with a set of standard flattening rules. It was published as a guideline to help information modellers on the subject. It was part of a larger document on Geometry in UML and in GML.
Find it here: (for the Dutch speaking amongst us): https://www.geonovum.nl/uploads/documents/Geometrieinmodelengml_1.0_0.pdf
In there chapter: 5.3 Normalisatieregels
It covers the usual subjects: multiple attributes, complex datatypes and associations.
I would like to know if there are other documents on these guidelines for flattening.
Is by the way denormalisation not a better term?
