Instruments/Options and Actors/constellation of Actors #10

  1. Instruments/options with transformative potential. Based on previous IPBES Assessments and our own, we have generated a list of “Instruments/options with transformative potential”. Options are categorized i) using IPBES categories of instruments and ii) using the 5 strategies in Chp 5. We propose the following analysis

    1. Occurrence of instruments/options in each strategy. Assuming the “case study corpus” captures cases where instruments have been put in place, we would like to compare occurrence of instruments from different strategies between the Global and the case study corpuses. [for example, do instruments from Strategy 2 appear very often in the global corpus, but much less in the case study corpus? This type of questions, to see the extend of implementation]
    2. Temporal evolution of instruments/options in each strategy. For example, do instruments in Strategy 1 (conserve, restore) were more common in the past, whereas instruments around views and values (strategy 5) are more common since the 2020’s? This type of questions).
    3. Sentiment analysis of instruments per strategy. (for example, do instruments in strategy 5 appear associated to abstract with more positive sentiments than instruments in strategy 3]? This could be combined with temporal analysis, and comparing the global versus the case study corpus

[Note: We will have finalized the categorization of instruments/options by strategy by Monday. If the team finally does not agree in the categorization, we can run the analysis above with the alternative IPBES categories of instruments]

  1. Actors/constellation of actors. We are working on a list of terms for actors, which will allow us to detect occurrence of terms in the list in the corpus (i.e., which actors are more often mentioned in the corpus?). We could do an analysis similar to the one above
    1. Occurrence of actors. Alone or in constellations (which actors appear together more frequently?)
    2. Temporal evolution of occurrence of actors/constellations
    3. Actors by strategies (above). I.e., which actors/constellations of actors appear more frequently in each strategy
    4. We could also do the analysis differentiating between actors in the global corpus vs. actors in the case study corpus.

The analysis I think would be of central interest to chapter 5 is a quantitative analysis of 1) the occurrence of instruments associated to the 5 strategies and 2) the occurrence of different actors in the Global corpus. These analysis could include frequency, change through time, and sentiment analysis.
