The best approach might be to use the auto-detection when a timespan is selected, and manual insertion when a time point is selected. The only thing this would leave impossible is to start filling and empty, anagest-enabled segment level manually (because you can only fill empty segment levels by inserting two boundaries, not by inserting one).
