Here are my notes on Virtual Collections as suggested by Stefano and discussed with German, Ellen and Gustavo:
Virtual Collection - An idea for showing content that is not part of the Collection hierarchy, but is related to a given collection is the Virual Collection. The collection owner could create a virtual collection and place any objects of interest into it. They could include other collections, datasets or files. The virtual collection might be given a name, but it wouldn't have any function other than containing these items. The virtual collection would not "own" any objects - you could only add items that were owned by other collection. Each item placed into the virtual collection would have to enforce it's own permissions for display to various users - (maybe a rule could be that only published items can be placed into the virtual container).
Display of the items in the virtual container in the ui to be determined. (Maybe similar to "Featured Dataverses" or possibly in a separate tab on the collection page or even mixed in with the cards owned by the "real" collection - that would inclusion in the SOLR search results, which is currently done for linked datasets and collections.)
