GUI blocks when the socket cannot be oppenned #170

On Windows, if the port is already in use, the GUI freezes for several seconds before displaying the error message.

I haven't had this issue for a while. Even on Windows, the GUI has been quick to tell me about errors. Closing the issue for now.
