Encoders are used in combination with stepper motors. Question is, are they really necessary because there will be a current measurement of the system and limit switches.

Because current unipolar stepper motors are not very reliable, it is good to have some kind of encoders to know real position of the laser beam. Suggested technology is magnetic rotary position sensor because they are good fit regarding mechanics of the system in terms of the dimensions. Also, they are low cost, and easy to use.

Example sensor: AS5047D

Magnetic encoder sensors are good, but they can not be used for detecting end state of the motor move
