This issue is related to the issue #1 because potentially main CPU and driver board can communicate over USB. Potential advantages:

power and data over the same cable
robust protocol
firmware upgrade

Potential disadvantages:

more complicated for implementation
firmware upgrade could be done over other serial protocols (UART, I2C, etc.)

Because firmware upgrade can be done over UART, and the main CPU does not have enough USB ports, main communication will be done over UART port, and not over USB.
